“The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” Winston Churchill
Heart Mountain New Beginnings boys ranch believes that horses are an invaluable tool in the learning and healing process that your boy will begin to experience during his stay at our boy’s ranch. Because of this, we have established a equine program for troubled teens.
The bond that can be established between a boy and a horse is not only therapeutic for the spirit, but provides a multitude of learning opportunities. Patience, respect, communication, responsibility and problem solving are just a few of the lessons to be learned.
Your son will have the opportunity to learn how to become a leader instead of a follower through our Equine Program for troubled teens. Horses are social animals and live within a strict hierarchy. Your son will acquire invaluable skills that will enable him to have a rewarding and successful relationship within the horse’s world. The skills will help him to understand and appreciate his own personal relationships.
How each boy interacts with the horses provides us with essential information that we use to form a treatment and therapy plan that is tailored to his individual needs.
The boys at HMNB experience life in all its phases while working with our horses. Depending on the time of year, he may assist a mare in the foaling process, work with a new colt, or help in the training of a young horse in its journey to becoming a usable riding horse.
While all the youth at the boy’s ranch will work with horses, participation in the equine program is directly related to the tier system. HMNB number one priority is the safety of the boys in our care. For this reason, we do not allow a new boy to work directly with the horses. We take a systematic, incremental approach to the advancement of each boy in our program.
Boys start off by assisting in the daily care of the horses, then move to assisting in the ground work and only the top tier boys are allowed to ride. This incremental approach insures safety and gives each Heart Mountain boy a goal to strive for.
Wyoming, horses and boys; It’s a winning combination that’s steeped in western tradition and the Rocky Mountain way of life.
